Event Description

Volunteers are needed to help restore dead oyster reefs for an oyster reef restoration project in the Indian River Lagoon. Oyster reefs are utilized by a unique ecosystem of flora and fauna, which utilize the reefs in much the same way a clown fish uses an anemone. Oysters also filter water toxins, acting as a natural Brita filter. Although these dead oyster mats do not provide these services on their own, they provide an anchor upon which live oyster live attach, creating new, healthy live reefs. What we'll be doing

The goal is to restore oyster reefs in Mosquito Lagoon, volunteers are needed to help make oyster shell mats. Each mat is made up of 36 oyster shells attached vertically with zip ties. The mats are attached to each other forming a large quilt-like structure."
